The Basic White Tee – Not So Basic Anymore

Who says a basic white tee has to be boring? Not me! The basic white tee has been a staple in my wardrobe as long as I can remember. And now with designers offering so many different takes on the basic white tee, the styling options are endless. In this post, we will take a look at just a few of the many ways to style this basic beauty.

To add some visual interest to the basic white tee, why not try a tunic style tee with an asymmetrical hemline. This white tunic tank from the cabi Clothing Line Spring 2016 collection made its way into my closet this year and has become my go-to tee ever since. This rayon tee is extremely soft to the touch and lightweight.

For an elevated casual look, pair this white tunic back to a pair of distressed denim (also from cabi, but a prior season) and a heeled sandal. These jeans are soft, have small seams, and stretch with you as you move. The Lucky Brand tassel style pendant I’ve had for a few years, but you can find similar styles at the Lucky Brand website. The shoes are Spring Step. Even though the heel on these sandals is higher than I normally wear, these sandals are extremely comfortable. They have great shock absorption and adjust at the ankle with laces.  These shoes have graced my closet for a few years now, but there are many similar styles on the Spring Step website.

Now let’s create a laid back casual look by tying the tunic at the waist. An asymmetrical hem lends itself to create the perfect knot at your waistline without making the tee too short because there is plenty of material to pull from to make the knot. Add a straw Fedora hat and a pair of gladiator sandals and you are ready to kick back in style and comfort. These sandals by Cob Hill caught my eye recently because they offer a feminine take on the gladiator sandal. The laser-cuts are eye catching and there is plenty of support and cushion in the footbed.

To add some color to the basic white tunic, add a scarf. The Flora Scarf is also from the cabi Spring 2016 collection but unfortunately is out of stock according to the website. That’s the beauty of a scarf, though. There are so many different prints, you have the ability to change the look and mood of your outfit just by changing the scarf. This floral scarf is bright and cheerful, but if you want a more sophisticated look, you may want to try a more subdued color pallet or even a silkier material.

Now last, but not least, let’s dress this white tunic up to create an outfit that can be worn to the office. By tucking the tunic into a pencil skirt and topping the tee with a collar necklace and a jacket, we are now ready for the office. Add some comfortable low heeled shoes to complete the outfit. The ponte knit pencil skirt is made by Lysse, and is super soft and stretches as you move making it both a very stylish and comfortable skirt to wear all day. Even the lining contains spandex which does not inhibit your movement. The high waist and below the knee length create a slimming silhouette. The silver collar necklace from Brighton is a prior year’s style, but they carry similar style collar necklaces on the Brighton website. The shoes are by Remonte.
