Cropped Pants – The Short of It

Wide Leg Cropped Jean with Peasant Blouse

I have a love hate relationship with cropped pants. I love the classic and timeless style; however, I don’t love the way cropped pants look on me. Measuring in at 5′ 4 1/2″, I find it difficult to find a pair of cropped pants that don’t make my legs appear even shorter than they really are. Your eye tends to be drawn to the bottom of a hemline, so cropped pants appear to make my legs stop far before they actually do. Wearing high heeled pumps is one way to create the illusion of length with cropped pants, but when you have arthritis, this option is out of the question.

Thanks to the ankle bootie, my problem is solved! I love how pairing cropped pants back to an ankle bootie elongates the leg line and can make your legs appear longer. The leg space between the bottom of the pants and the top of the bootie is decreased, creating a longer leg line. These wide legged cropped jeans by White House|Black Market have gotten plenty of wear this summer. Above, I pair my dark wash crops with a neutral ankle bootie by Earth Shoes and a tucked-in floral peasant blouse. These dark wash jeans can be dressed up or down, depending on the occasion. They will also transition nicely into fall by switching out the blouse with an oversized sweater. The cotton, polyester, and spandex blend gives nicely throughout the day and the hemline line falls just above the ankle.

Now, I transition from a casual weekend look to a dressier night out for dinner just by switching out the peasant top with a draped halter top also from White House|Black Market. (The halter top is no longer available on-line). The top is gathered at the neck and then falls fluidly to a drape over a fitted waistline. This creates the perfect rule of thirds in styling. One-third on the top half and two-thirds on the bottom half. The same silhouette is created with the peasant blouse above. The neckline of the halter top is a statement in itself and needs no jewelry. Wear a bold pair of gold statement earrings to complete the outfit.

Earth Shoes-

Now for the shoes. I normally only wear shoes with rubber heels because any type of hard heel creates pain in my neck after only a few minutes of walking. Earth brand shoes to the rescue! The cushioned foot bed and arch support create the perfect shock absorption and have made this my go to ankle bootie/sandal for the summer.  The perforations and studded ankle strap give this ankle bootie a very stylish and edgy look. This shoe will also transition nicely into fall. Stylish and comfortable!
